Narnia and The Hobbit

We talked about the differences and similarities of The Chronicles of Narnia and The Hobbit in class. Someone also mentioned that The Hobbit, and the Tolkien world in general, was easier for them to get into than that of Narnia. I believe their point about Tolkien’s world was that the history was more developed. I have to agree, I really love how deep Tolkien went into his world from creatures, to character backgrounds and several languages, Tolkien’s world feels richer to many readers. This probably has something to do with the popularity of The Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit being greater than that of the Narnia series.

I think some of this has to do with the background characters and the locations used in the stories. Narnia has animals that are familiar to us from Greek mythology. Also, when we first meet the children they are in our world not the secondary world. The feel, if you will, of the story feel more known than that of The Lord of the Rings and Hobbit. Tolkien used creatures wholly different to our world and we never see our world. It gives the feel that is more alien, but in a way that beckons us to explore and find new things and peoples.
