Evil in The Hobbit

Obviously, the greatest example of evil in The Hobbit is the Ring. It draws Bilbo to itself and in the Lord of the Rings is the ultimate form of evil other than Sauron himself. The Ring also makes you paranoid about its safety and think that others are going to take it for themselves. Gollum was extremely protective of the ring and when he knew it was lost he went insane and was ready to murder to get it back.
In the Hobbit thought, there is another force almost as strong as the ring, the Arkenstone. Thorin wants the Arkenstone above all the treasure in Erebor with a passion that with time, could rival Gollum’s lust for the ring. Thorin's father wandered Middle Earth for the remainder of his life because he went insane after he lost it. When Thorin sees that Bilbo has “betrayed him” he seemingly goes insane, forbids Bilbo from coming back, and swears that they will never be comrades again.

I had never previously thought about the Ring and the Arkenstone being like each other. Now the more I think about it the more they have in common.
