My probably unpopular opinion on a happy ending

Most of the fantasy novels I have read have some form of snapping back to the primary world of reality. It is the check in our brains and the author's encouragement that this is just a dream or fanciful story. That the secondary world, though real, is only temporary for some, they are not meant to stay or even be there in the first place. This, however, wasn’t the case for Walter Golden and I am glad for it. Whenever I read a fantasy I always am reminded that the happy ending in the secondary world isn’t real, that these people going on adventures from the primary world must always go back and deal with a harsh reality in this. However, Walter gets his girl (a lovely kind hearted one at that) and is able to reign as king for the rest of his days. It is a permanent happy ending, and I feel as though we do not often get that. Yes, there is always a part where the protagonist subtly changes attitude and becomes a better person or they have learned a valuable lesson they can apply to their real life. Walter had nothing to go back to besides the promise of death by his ex-wife’s clan. So I am glad I have finally read a fantasy novel that ends with everything being okay and no one longing for the other secondary or primary life. Call me a hopeless romantic or an ignorant fool for liking a cheesy happy ending, but it doesn’t make my joy for this book any less real.
