First I would like to say that I am not disappointed in this book "The Hobbit" will always be one of my favorite books never mind fantasy story. What I am saddened by is the lack of important similarities and character changes that happened between the movie and the book, this is something that was lightly discussed in class but I didn't really register with because the last time I read this book I was 11 and am now reaching 21 years old so in those ten years I remembered what seemed to me like it was important in the book. For example I could recall the discussion that happened between Bilbo and Gollum down to the smallest of riddle, but not much else.
The book and movie are extremely different in my opinion, the way that Thorin acts is (for lack of a better word sorry for the pun guys) thorny in the movie. He is rude and unkind as well as doubtful of Gandalf's choice of Bilbo in the beginning, however the opposite is true in the book, He acts regal but in no way, in my opinion, is he unkind to Bilbo. I am bothered by the excessive creative adaptations that have been made, and interjected. It breaks my heart because the book is fantastic as is, not changes needed. I think that what happened is wrongful to Tolkien and the world he created. There isn't much I can say except that I am saddened by how much I loved the movies and then gone back and read the book, seeing how different they are.
